Painting Facial Features

(Excerpt from Vasalissa's Doll Workbook, ©1995 & 1998, S. McFadden)

1. Refer to [illus. 7] for outlines of the facial features. With a purple vanishing pen, outline eyebrows, eyes and lips.

2. With your paintbrush and textile medium, brush in the eye and lip areas. This will look milky upon application but will dry clear. When these areas are dry, snip off any stray fibers with cuticle scissors or push short fibers back into the textile medium area with the base of your paintbrush. Experience will teach you when these steps are necessary.

3. With acrylic artist paints, brush in the circular iris. Allow to dry. Then paint in the pupil with black or payne”s grey. Now, carefully dot in the eyelid and lash line. You may need to reapply to get the desired effect you want. Also, feathered eyebrows can be painted with the same stippling technique. Add white highlights in both eyes. Refer to [illus. 8].

4. With desired color, paint lips [illus. 7]. Allow facial features to dry. End by brushing a layer of varnish over them. Set head aside to dry.
